Properly Storing Feta Cheese

About a year ago, a friend was telling me how she picked up some feta cheese at the store and the lid of the container was not closed properly. So on her way home, the container opened and all the liquid spilled out making a huge mess in the car. I asked her why she had the liquid in the first place and she mentioned she always asks for it when buying feta to store it in at home. But you can make your own!

If you’ve ever taken a look in my refrigerator, you would have noticed a container of feta cheese. Doesn’t everyone have a plastic container full of feta cheese in their fridge? šŸ™‚

We love feta cheese in my house, and I bake with it often. Whether I’m making kiflice (one of my favorites) or adding it to salads, it’s a main staple in my fridge.

If you’ve ever purchased a larger block of feta at the deli counter and didn’t store it in a liquid, you probably noticed after a few days some areas start to turn yellowish and look really dry. But how do you replicate the liquid from the store?

Water and salt. Yup, that’s it. All you need is a tupperware container, salt, water, and feta.

Cut up your feta cheese and ensure it can fit in the tupperware container you plan to store it in. All the cheese needs to be covered by water and the lid needs to close securely, so keep that in mind and make sure you’re not stacking the pieces too high in the container. Use multiple containers if you can instead.

In a pot, boil enough water to fill your container. Add a tablespoon of salt to the water. Once it boils, take it off the heat and cool completely. This is best to do before bed so it can cool overnight. Your cheese can spend the night in the fridge without a problem.

Once the water has cooled, fill your container and that’s it! The water will last longer than your cheese, but if you don’t eat cheese often, I would recommend changing out the water every 2nd week or so.
